Required fields in a rent receipt
A complete rent receipt should include all the details an employer or tax officer expects.
- Receipt number and date
- Tenant and landlord names
- Property address
- Rent amount (in figures and words)
- Rent period (month/year)
- Payment mode and landlord signature
Revenue stamp and PAN rules
A revenue stamp is generally needed when a single cash payment exceeds Rs 5,000. If annual rent crosses the HRA threshold, the landlord's PAN is usually required on the receipt.
Example layout
A simple receipt header reads "Rent Receipt", followed by the receipt number and date, the parties, property, amount, period and payment mode, ending with the landlord's signature.
