From search to move-in — the step-by-step process of renting a home in India.
Renting for the first time or want to avoid brokerage and mistakes? Follow this simple, proven process to find, verify and move into the right home.
Keep rent under ~30% of income (use our Rent Affordability Calculator). Factor in deposit, maintenance and bills — the Move-in Cost Calculator shows the total upfront cash you need.
Filter by area, budget and type. Prefer owner-listed, zero-brokerage homes. Shortlist 3–5 and visit in person or on a video call before deciding.
Verify the owner's identity and ownership, agree the rent, deposit, notice period and who pays maintenance. Always put it in a written rent agreement.
Pay the deposit and first month's rent, collect a signed agreement and rent receipts (great for HRA). Document the flat's condition with photos on day one.
Rent directly from owners. On Rentrm, owner-listed homes are zero-brokerage — you deal with the owner directly.
Usually ID proof (Aadhaar/PAN), a couple of photos, and sometimes employer/college proof. A written rent agreement is essential.
Commonly 1–3 months of rent, refundable at move-out after deducting dues or agreed repairs.
